This is a comprehensive plan review course on conventional roof framing and manufactured trusses. It is based on the 2021 International Residential Code.

Target Audience and General Intent

This is an immersive code compliance course that are tailored towards all stake holders in the construction industry. The course are also optimized for code officials including plan reviewers and inspectors. This means that the training is focused on code compliant design. Additionally, the course also includes training on how plan reviewers and inspectors can systematically review construction documents for code compliance.

While we have highlighted the value to plan reviewers and inspectors, this course offers great value to designers too.  Both designers and contractors taking this course will encounter the rigor that is necessary in designing and building code compliant structures.

The Course Content

  1. The loading requirements for roof rafters and manufactured trusses – dead loads, live loads and snow loads.
  2. Resources that may be used in the determination of dead loads.
  3. Live load reduction requirements in conventional construction.
  4. The deflection limitations on framing members.
  5. Sizing of rafters and ceiling joists.
  6. Code requirements for rafter ties, collar ties, ridge straps, purlins and purlin braces.
  7. General framing requirements including blocking, bridging, notches, cuts and holes.
  8. Wind uplift anchorage of roof framing members.
  9. Roof sheathing requirements including conformance standards, grades, span rating, orientation and nailing requirements etc.
  10. Plan review of a conventionally framed roof.
  11. Plan review of Engineered manufactured trusses (Plan check example).

What Will You Learn?

  • You will learn how to complete code compliance plan reviews for conventionally framed roofs and engineered manufactured trusses in residential structures designed under the provisions of the International Residential Code.
  • You will learn the concepts behind the conventional roof framing provisions in the International Residential Code so that you can develop a deeper appreciation of what the provisions are intended to achieve.
  • Through the plan check example provided in the last section, you will learn how to navigate through complex plan reviews on this subject and write effective comments when deficiencies are observed.

Course Content

Loads and Limits
In this section we will cover the mechanics of roof loading on structural members. We will show how the plan reviewer or designer can determine the  dead loads of typical building materials. Additionally, we will show how roof live loads are determined from the code including ceiling live loads. We will also review the code limits for deflection of rafters and ceiling joists and how these limits affect the design process.

Conventional Roof Framing
We will review the conventional roof framing construction requirements that are provided in Chapter 8 of the residential code. We will look at the sizing of rafters and ceiling joists from the 2022 California Residential Code span tables along with the factors that a designer and plan reviewer needs to consider when determining the adequacy of members. We will also look at other member requirements including rafter ties, collar ties and ridge straps as well as the connection requirements for all members. Finally we will look at uplift connection requirements and how the plan reviewer and designer determine when additional connections are needed. We will also look at typical connectors from Simpson and MiTek that are available in the market today. We have provided a check list of the plan check items that are covered in this section in the document named 'Doc2: Notes and Guidelines' that is available on your dashboard. We have also provided a document named 'Doc1: Links and Resources' that provides active links to the resources covered in this section.

Conventional Roof Framing – Part 2
This section covers the code requirements for blocking at bearing points to prevent out of plane rotation. We will also cover the requirements for bridging including the location where bridging is required, the types of bridging and the conditions under which bridging is required. Additionally we will look at the limits on notches, cuts and holes on roof framing members. We will also discuss the code requirements for conventional framing of openings. Finally, we will cover wood structural panels from conformance standards, structural properties, construction specifications and grade stamps. We will discuss what the plan reviewer needs to look for when reviewing wood structural panels used for roof framing applications. We have provided a check list of the plan check items that are covered in this section in the document named 'Doc2: Notes and Guidelines' that is available on your dashboard. We have also provided a document named 'Doc1: Links and Resources' that provides active links to the resources covered in this section.

Plan Check Example – Conventional Roof Construction
This is a comprehensive plan review example for conventional roof construction. In this example, we are reviewing the roof framing drawings of a two story residence designed to meet the conventional construction requirements in the 2022 California Residential Code. We will go through all the framing requirements in the drawings provided to verify code compliance. We will also write comment for cases where deficiencies are observed. The drawings used in this example are available for download on your dashboard.

Plan Review of Manufactured/Engineered Trusses
This is a comprehensive lesson on the review of trusses. We have provided complete roof truss calculations (MiTek) for a one story detached residential accessory structure that is 35 feet by 28 feet. Additionally, we have provided engineered drawings showing the roof framing plan, the foundation plans and construction details. We are using engineered drawings so that we can include drag loads in the scope of our review. The trusses are engineered and include girder trusses, drag trusses, jack trusses as well gable trusses supporting mechanical equipment. We will introduce the plan reviewer to the layout of truss calculations and show how a plan reviewer can navigate the review of engineered trusses. We will show the items that the plan reviewer needs to consider when reviewing engineered trusses. The structural drawings and truss calculations used in this example are available for download on your dashboard.
